“… Lyra felt something strange happen to her body. She felt as if she had been handed the key to a great house she hadn’t known was there, a house that was somehow inside her, and as she turned the key, she felt other doors opening deep in the darkness, and lights coming on.”

Back to Facilitation for other interest groups

Through relationships, living abroad, inspiring teachers, books and stories and also through the dance, I’ve been given the opportunity to question things that I took for granted when growing up. I had to unlearn many things and also I had to find information about Very Important Things That No One Told Me About Before… This took me quite some years after leaving home, I can tell you!

News sometimes alarms me about general areas of neglect in young people’s development (social, emotional, relational, sexual), which ultimately trickles through into adolescence and maturity. Although I come from a very loving family, growing up was a bit of a DIY project! Problems with friends, pressure of home work, questions about sexuality, discomfort around emotions, needing a boost of self confidence…

In a non-classroom setting we explore some unfamiliar territory and therefore may have to invent our own language as we go along. With mixed groups, we discuss topics as the body, physical and emotional literacy, assertiveness and sexuality. With girl-only groups we also include our moontime and womanhood. The general aim is to emphasise feelings of self worth and self esteem and creating healthy and respectful boundaries with self and others.
